By Marriage
Citizenship through marriage celebrated before 27.04.1983
Foreign women who married an Italian citizen before the date 27.04.1983 automatically acquire citizenship.
Men DO NOT automatically acquire citizenship through marriage and must follow the procedure of Article 5 of Law 91/92.
Application for citizenship through marriage celebrated after 27.04.1983 (Article 5 of Law No. 91/92)
The application for citizenship through marriage can only be submitted if the following requirements are met:
- The applicant must wait at least until the third year of marriage to submit the application (or 1 year and a half if there are minor children in common with the Italian citizen).
- The marriage certificate must have been transcribed by an Italian Comune (municipality).

By Naturalization
Italian nationality through naturalization is another path to obtain Italian citizenship.
